Gender Roles in Household Decision Making

This study examines the dynamics of gender roles in contemporary urban household decision-making, focusing on power distribution and spousal negotiation. The primary objective of the study is to analyze how gender equality influences domestic policy-making patterns in the modern era. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytical design, primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with working couples in urban areas and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results show that the domestic power structure has shifted from absolute patriarchy to a flexible, selective partnership, which is divided into three typologies: Joint Decisions on macro-financial aspects and children's education, Independent Authority of the Wife on the domestic-micro domain, and Dominance of the Husband (Veto Rights) on high-risk strategic decisions. In line with Resource Theory, the increase in the wife's bargaining power is driven by the ownership of intellectual capital (education) and independent economic contributions. Although role transitions trigger tensions due to the ego of traditional masculinity and the double burden, family stability and harmony are successfully maintained through the implementation of deliberative communication and adaptive role division
